On 10 September 2025, H.E. Mr. Nadhavathna Krishnamra, Ambassador of Thailand to the United Kingdom hosted a reception at the Embassy in honour of Professor Dr. Jonathan P. Shepherd, the Prince Mahidol Award Laureate in Public Health for the year 2024 (B.E. 2567), from the United Kingdom.

Professor Dr. Jonathan P. Shepherd, Emeritus Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Director of the Security, Crime, and Intelligence Institute of Cardiff University, was awarded the Prince Mahidol Award in the field of Public Health for his pioneering work on the “Cardiff Model for Violence Prevention”. The model was developed following his experiences treating patients injured by violent crimes, many of which had not been reported to law enforcement. By linking data between hospitals and the police, the Cardiff Model identifies patterns, locations, timings, and factors of violent incidents, enabling effective prevention strategies. This approach has helped save countless lives and protect communities and has since been adopted by the World Health Organization as a model of excellence for violence prevention.

On this occasion, the Ambassador highlighted the significance of the Prince Mahidol Award, which reflects the vision of His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkla, the Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health in Thailand, who taught that “True success is not in the learning, but in its application to the benefit of mankind.” This principle remains the guiding spirit of all Prince Mahidol Award Laureates.

The reception was attended by distinguished guests including former UK laureates of the Prince Mahidol Award, friends of Thailand including a former British Ambassador to Thailand, as well as Thai medical and public health students in the United Kingdom, who came to celebrate and honour Professor Shepherd’s achievement.
