2025 is the significant year to celebrate the 170th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and the United Kingdom. The relationship between the two nations dates back to the signing of the Bowring Treaty on 18 April 1855 by Phrabat Somdet Phra Paramenthra Maha Mongkut Phra Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua (King Rama IV) and Sir John Bowring, who at the time served as the Chief Superintendent of Trade in the Far East and Governor, Commander-in-Chief, and Vice-Admiral of Hong Kong under British Empire. The Bowring Treaty was the first trade agreement between Siam and a Western nation, marking a pivotal moment that brought Siam into the era of modern international free trade, leading to rapid economic growth during that time.

To celebrate this historic occasion, the Royal Thai Embassy in London and the British Embassy in Bangkok jointly organised a logo design competition to commemorate the 170th anniversary of Thai-UK diplomatic relations. The competition was open to Thai and British nationals residing in either Thailand or the United Kingdom. A total of 128 entries were submitted, and the winning design came from Mr. Nawanthorn Boonprasert, a student from the Faculty of Industrial Education and Technology at King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi.

The winning logo, titled “The Unity of Elephant and Lion Relations,” integrates the elephant and lion—national symbols of Thailand and the United Kingdom—harmoniously into the digits "170." The design prominently uses blue and red, the colors of both nations' flags.

Throughout 2025, the Royal Thai Embassy will host a variety of activities and events to celebrate this momentous anniversary.
